Organizing Thread

Do you need some ideas for thread storage? You can find a few on Karen's blog, she is hosting a linking party.
I love to see beautiful collections of thread in pretty displays on the wall. But I can't have one of my own. I don't have too much thread. I don't have enough space. I have cats, so I can't hang anything on the wall.

I store my thread in boxes.
I keep this set in its original box.

The thread for piecing- sorted by color. My machine likes almost any type of thread for piecing, so I don't pay attention to the brands.

For free motion quilting, my industrial machine loves only very good quality thread, so I keep this thread sorted by brand.

Small spools -  this was my candy box some time ago...

now it is the favorite toy of my little nephew when he visits with us. So I can't keep it organized!

Here is an easy way to prevent unwinding, using a small piece of sticky tape (a type that can be easily removed  and doesn't leave any sticky residue). I do this only for the thread that unwinds easily, like silk, rayon...

And a last idea, to help you get rid of the spools that don't hold enough thread for a project.
Variegated thread is beautiful. And expensive! So we want to use even the last yard!

I use that thread to finish the edges of different things ( like postcards, bowls or boxes). This is a file folder.

So, no pretty display of thread, just something functional for me! And away from the dust!

  3. I am a follower of your blog and really liked your envelope from your earlier post. I was wondering what sewing technique you used to finish the edges with the variegated thread. Did you use a serger? Satin stitch? I am a new sewer and can't figure it out. I was so impressed that I ran out and bought my first spool of variegated thread.
